Can You Deal With Panic? Your Personal Survival Depends On it.
Posted on May 28th, 2009. Filed under: Sports. The first time I was put in a survival situation, I remember it was like my mind began to spin like a rolodex trying to find a familiar point.
Today’s society has access to cell phones, street signs, people, and buildings. Help is accessible from everywhere.
But in an emergency, what if you can’t find a familiar point of reference or there’s no help to be found. Research shows whenever an individual is placed in a survival situation our basic fears begin to kick in (i.e. fear of death, dark, unknown, injury, animals, etc) and this results in PANIC.
Panic is controlled by using the STOP acronym. Let’s take a look:
The S T O P acronym:
S - Sit
T - Think
O - Observe
P - Plan
First sit down. Don’t run and create more trouble by racing around like a chicken with his head cut off.
Next, you need to think about the situation and remain calm. Along with observe the situation to make rational and informed decisions. Many times a simple pause to think and observe can show a way out of our predicament, that most will not see.
Finally, with your wits about you make a plan to deal with the situation in the best possible way.
