We all know that Valentine’s Day is celebrated on the 14th of February and that it is a day to celebrate our love for one another. The tradition is that on Valentine’s Day you give flowers, gifts, candy and special greeting cards to that special someone in your life. Today it is highly commercialized as this day ranks number two, only to Christmas in the number of greeting cards sent.

A popular version of the history of this holiday is that Valentine was a priest and that an emperor by the name of Claudius II was ruling Rome. Claudius believed that single men made better soldiers because they were not distracted by thoughts of love and would not allow members of his army to marry. Supposedly, Valentine did not believe this and secretly performed marriage It is thought that the history of Valentine’s Day goes back to the third century in Rome. Some say that Valentine was an imprisoned man who had fallen deeply in love with the daughter of the jailor. Just before he was to be executed, he wrote a love letter to the young lady, proclaiming his love and signed the letter ‘from your Valentine’. The same message is used in Valentine’s Day cards to this day, and also stamped on candy and gifts.

The holiday has become much commercialized and is celebrated in the United States by both young and old. School children are treated to special Valentine’s Day parties in the classrooms. The children bring from home, special Valentine’s Day cards they have made themselves or bought. The children exchange their cards with each other and special Valentine’s Day treats are enjoyed by the children. Special cookies and cupcakes are made by the parents of the children, all decorated gaily with pink or red hearts and Valentine’s day pictures are taken by the teachers for the children to remember this special day by.

Even the elderly in nursing homes are not forgotten on this day. There are often small parties planned for the older people where they are served special cookies, pies and treats in honor of this special holiday.

Many men take this day to show their wives or girlfriends how much they are loved by buying expensive gifts such as elaborate jewelry , large stuffed animals, beautiful bouquets of flowers or even preparing a special romantic dinner. Valentine’s Day is also a day that many men choose to propose marriage to their sweethearts because it is considered ‘the day of love’. Many couples want to be sure to remember this special day by taking pictures for Valentine day so they do not forget the special celebrations they shared on this day. In the elementary schools in the United States, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the classrooms each and every year. All of the kids bring with them one special Valentine’s Day card to put on the desk or in a special basket for each of their classmates. Valentine’s Day pictures are taken by the teachers and the children are treated to cookies and cupcakes decorated with red or pink hearts. Often red colored clothing is worn as red is the symbolic color of the day. February 14th is also a very popular day for many couples to wed.
